CREEPINGNET'S WORLD
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
THe Super Mario Bros. series of games are what I consider the titular cash crop of Nintendo's franchising. The Brooklyn Plumber - sorry but that is the lore I grew up with, and the lore I'm sticking to - has been in bazillion games, and pretty much lost me when Mario 64 came out in 1996. To me, 2D Mario was always the best.

Then comes this, a modern, 3D rendered, 2D, side scroller MArio game for WII, and well, it basically brought back the whole 2D mario thing that had long since, at least to my eyes, been gone for decades. It was cool to see a modern day application of it, and Nintendo did a really bang-up job on this, so much so it has had quite a few sequels since on the DS, Wii-U, and so on, and even got it's own level construction set for Mario Maker for hte Wii-U

And that's pretty much it for it. Other than that, it followed the same premise as the first one from 1985 - Princess Toadstool has been captured by Bowser, rescue her, except we have nicer graphics, music with real instruments, and a savegame system. This is how I always felt these franchises should have gone.
Revisiting the Latest Mario....My Experiences
Okay, so let's get this straight, I was called "Mario Freak" at one point as a kid, because I really liked video games, and the Mario series was my first major long term series of any great length I was into. Anyway, I'm OOOOLD, so I really don't care much for the new stuff. I mostly play this stuff as a short spurt time waster, and as a nostalgic look to the past, so I'm not terribly interested in new stuff.

My wife has tried, off and on, to get me into newer games, because she does not quite get that this is mostly a "Retro" thing for me, and newer games will require a level of investment that I'm unwilling to put in, because there's so much more to learn now. That's one of my fears with most modern systems, is the stuff I'm getting involved with will become some kind of ridiculous time suck I can't enjoy in short spurts. Dragon warrior on the NES is heavy enough, because I'm always going "hey, wait, I gotta' save (continues 1048 block trek all the way back to the original castle to save my game because I don't have 70GP to spend on a Wing of Wyvern to get back).
