CREEPINGNET'S WORLD

The Hell of being a cat owner with back pain and too much going on
Automatic Litterbox Hell
I grew up with a single mother crazy cat lady, I had a platonic friend and roommate who was literally named "Kat", then I got engaged to my wife (not the room mate) and we got a cat. I've probably scooped enough litterboxes between the 32-or so my mom has had plus that room mate, plus our two to fill multiple lifetimes. My fucking 43, my back hurts, I work too much, sleep too little, and get involved in too much shit.

Anyway, since manufacturer sites and sales sites keep gatekeeping reviews of the products they sell, and then probably have some bullshit A.I. writing new reviews on their products....I'm going to review products on my website now - YAY! More complaining from CreepingNet! Well...not all, there IS some good stuff.

MAKE/MODEL REVIEW
PetZones Safe Scoop - $150-200
With our first, now a "Super Duper Senior" cat for how long she's been using these things, I tried all kinds of strategies. My wife has a sniffer that can detect a turd from six miles away, and could sense Ammonia from another state, so having a litter box that's not smelly is a NEED, not a want. Prior to this, I had been hiding litterboxes in a literal freakin' CLOSET - usually my so-called "Man Cave" at the time - and then scooping them once a week because Arm & Hammer Clump N' Seal is the best goddamn litter ever invented! Seriously, I could get MONTHS out of the same litter, and it'd never smell at all. Yet, when you come back from a 12 hour shift doing I.T. where you also do some of the heavy lifting of server equipment, including a 800LB UPS with a strap that broke, or have to wrestle a Multi-Function Printer into a people elevator.

When we had one cat, this machine was GLORIOUS. Our elder cat doesn't dig holes to the other side of the earth. I'd get about 3-4 years out of one unit, and cleaning it was pretty easy....just keep the plastic bags from the store, and wrap the back tray in them, then dump the waste. This machine, with Clump N' Seal, and a cat that doesn't insist on digging a hole to China every time they use the litter box, works out great. It was great, until it wasn't.

Then we got a second cat, and this box became a goddamn nightmare to take care of. He would dig and dig and dig and dig, and the cleaning mechanism would get stuck. The box also would reek far more far sooner, and his huge monster turds wouldn't always fit into the waste area properly. That added, this was during COVID-19 and of course, every time that orange shithead gets in office, things go to hell.

Soon I noticed each unit out of the three we had, would get progressively worse. I would spend days putzing about trying to get at the mechanisms. You can't even take the damn thing apart to clean or fix it. It uses metal gears that grab onto a strip of holes on the underside of the lip of the otherwise conventional gray ABS plastic litter tray, and after awhile, dust and dirt would build up and screw up the mechanism, causing it to fail to complete cycles rather frequently. IT also doesn't help that the mechanism is only on ONE side of the unit.

PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro Legacy + Forever Tray - $200 + 50
Fed up with both the cat digging to china, and the PetZones becoming a daily aggrivation, I decided to bite the bullet and buy the more expensive litterbox. So I decided to give the PetSafe ScoopFree a try. Again, this was a great litter box for about 7 years with two cats. Even Mr. "I'mma dig all day to the Kalahari Desert" didn't phase it until the last year or two.

The upsides are maintenance lasts an entire damn month! That's right, 30 days, no smell. The litter just gets changed out. Also, it never smells, it was thousands of times better than the PetZones in this regard. The PEtZones would stink up toward the end of it's litter exchange cycle, and after awhile, that odor would stick. The PetSafe though? 7 years, no stink as long as the litter got changed once a month. To change the litter you just close up the tray like a board game box...or if you paid the extra $50 on Amazon for a "Forever Tray", you don't change the tray at all - you just dump the litter and the waste, and then refill with more of the special crystal litter. It has a usage counter too...thing is, the usage counter is kinda' useless for us because our cats are so damn consistant, more often than not, it was 109 uses

However, the downsides, first, are that you are still paying MORE for more crap to get it where it works ideally for me. $50 more for a Forever tray, and then the litter costs $25 a month for measured amounts. Also, the digger cat does throw the litter EVERYWHERE! The sides are a bit low, so then tack on yet ANOTHER $50 for a goddamn privacy hood. I built a new one out of wood for our first one which I kept under my desk which allowed me to keep an eye on it. Used that setup for the last three years of it's life. It ran great for that time being, then it just stopped working one day. That said, it was 7 years, so it was worth it. But that also said, I'm not fully a fan of the litter because it's not exactly, eh, eco-friendly, and it's also hard to procure at a regular local Pet Store sometimes, as my wife buys it on AMazon, and it's rarely on-time.

So then I have to go through return-hell via UPS, to send it back. I bought another one, let's hope this one lasts years instead of Months before I have to fork out a stupid amount of money on a motor, some minor electronics, and a bunch of David Maculay' style worm gears and mechanisms for a pet toilet.

So then that brings me to our next entry....
PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping Litterbox
The PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping Litterbox sounds like an improvement on paper....higher sides, a tray to remove waste instead of lifting the whole damn box, and the litter tray is a deeper forever tray....BUT...

IT IS AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT!!!

We bought it on May 5th 2026, and it lasted until May 16th 2026. Out of all three, If I could give it negative ratings on another site, I would. So on May 16th, after weeks of working fine, it suddenly decided that it wasn't going to work and the grate would hang at the disposal tray....and NOT go back. Rapidly pressing the manual scoop button could retract it back to the original position. Checking the mechanisms, there was no dust or dirt. Tried lubing things, and it worked until I put the top back on (!!). So avoid this one, it's garbage.
