NEC has a pretty consistant model system for their computers - basically they start with the term PC for "Personal Computer", and then a two, three, or four digit number, followed by four numbers at the end that determine various modifyable attributes. For example, a NEC PC-440-1531, is a NEC Versa 40EC with a 250MB 2.5" VersaPak HDD module, 8MB of RAM (4MB Memory Card + 4MB on board), and a regular Color TFT Active Matrix 640x480p 9.4" LCD Panel.
You can also, at least on the 1990's products, tell the date of manufacture by the first digit of the serial#. Say you have a Versa P/75 and the serial is 57007204 - that's a 1995 build. This also can often be confirmed by various stamp and component dates inside the device. This seems to even work on eighties products as a NEC ProSpeed with a serial# of 9X00505HH would be likely a 1989 build. It seems very consistant.

Decoding the "accessory numbers" (for a lack of better terms)
NEC has 2-5 digits after the model number to determine various things about the computer in question based upon those digits. These digits change from model to model as technologies grow and change.
