CREEPINGNET'S WORLD
DIG DUG
1983, ATARI
Dig Dug was a "Maze Arcade Game" released in 1982 by Namco (a business partner of Atari in Japan at the time). The game was developed by Masahisa Ikegami and Shigeru Yokoyama and became one of the B-tier well known great Arcade titles of the golden Arcade era of the late 70's/early 80's. The Atari 2600 port was released in 1983 and was only ever a Silver Label cart in 1983 and 1988.

In the Atari 2600 version of the game, you play a space-age miner named "Dig Dug" who uses a rocket powered "shovel" to dig tunnels underneath the soil. The main goal of the game is to kill all the enemies on screen to complete a level while digging holes underground. The game continues indefiniatley until you use up all of your lives. Basically, it's a high score game.

Dig Dug was successful enough not just to get ports of the original arcade, but also a sequel, Dig Dug 2, in 1985, which also had a port for the NES (Which I talk about in the Sup 400-in-1 pages as I exists on that system). I'm surprised it does not get more mention for the 2600.
My Experiences
Dig Dug was a game I got in high school from the haul from a girl at school. I remember enjoying playing it quite a bit back in high school, though not as much as I do now in my 40's for some reason. I eventually did sell it in the big purge of 2014, and forgot how much I enjoyed it until Winter 2024 when I bought it again, and started playing it...a lot.

Currently, this is probably my best game on the 2600 VCS other than Adventure. I'm always racking up huge scores in the 60,000-100,000 range these days. So this one has become quite the keeper. Always fun to play some rounds during breakfast on Sunday before I do my usual book reading for awhile.
