Spartan X, better known in my region as "Kung-Fu Master", was a arcade game later ported to the NES/Famicom by Nintendo. Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario/Zelda) was involved somewhat in the porting over from the arcade. This game is one of the bigger classic "Black Box" releases for the American NES. It's a "Beat-em'-Up" side scroller where you use matrtial arts to fight enemies.
The game takes it's plot somewhat from Hong Kong martial arts films, with some heavy Jackie Chan influnces. The player controls Thomas, whose name was taken from Jackie Chan's character in the movie Wheels on Meals (1984), as he fights his way through 5 levels of the Devil's Temple to rescue his girlfrind Sylvia from crime boss Mr. X. Kung-Fu Master is a cult-classic in America, considering a lot of 80's pop-culture was the ground-zero for American interest in various aespects of various Asian cultures, including martial arts.
