Thexder 1986, Game Arts, Famicom |
For the IBM Personal Computer release of Thexder (through Sierra) click here - otherwise, stick around for the NES/Famicom port here. Thexder was a game created by Game Arts in Japan in 1985. It was ported to the Famicom around that time and only ever released in Japan. The IBM PC Release is the only release I'm aware of in the United States (which is one of the few DOS games that actually leverages the IBM PC Jr/Tandy 1000 enhanced audio and sound hardware), and that one was imported by the famous Sierra who made the likes of King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry.
In Thexder, you play as a giant fighting robot, often referred to by some Japanaphiles as a "Gundam", who can convert into a flying space craft, and then back into a robot, kind of like a transformer. You have an auto-targeting gun in your robot/starfighter combo gundam thing, but despite some of the easy additions to make life easier, it's still a pretty challenging game. This game was never really a part of the American consciousness, and as far as I'm aware, as I said before, only the PC version is one that I'm aware of that made it state-side.Not Too Surprising, I like the PC Version Better - My Experiences I remember seeing this in the Sierra catalog in 1993 (my sister bought Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist new in 1993) listed for the IBM PC. It really piqued my curiosity because here was a game from Japan, and now being exclusively promoted through an AMERICAN MS-DOS PC game supplier. Howver, that there's a famicom port is not too surprising. I still have not determined if I want this one or not. I tend to like the control on my Tandy 1000A a lot better, even with the "Herky Jerky" scrolling, because it just feels better to me for some reason. Videos Other Stuff |
