Challenger is a 1985 Action Adventure game created by HudsonSoft, originally planned as a port of the ZX Spectrum game "Stop the Express", and sort of evolved into it's own thing. The game is another exclusive Japanese title and hence why it may not be familiar to people in the USA, such as myself.
The game is said to be "uniquely constructed", mixing a side scrolling (and quite fast paced) platformer, with single screen action shooters, and top down scrolling shooters. The game is also unique for having a 100 screen map as a result. The game basically follows the plot of a character known as the "Archeologist" seeking to save a princess from an evil character known as Dr. Waldorado.
