CREEPINGNET'S WORLD
Paperboy
1988, Mindscape, NES/Famicom
Paperboy was an arcade game made by Atari Games and Midway, released in 1984 that put you on the seat of a bicycle delivering newspapers in a zany neighborhood full of crazy obstacles. The NES Port was done by HiTech Expressions in the late 1980's and was one of the smash hits for the NES at the time that nobody really seems to talk about much anymore.

In Paperboy, you take on the role as the ubiqutous paperboy - the pubescent/teenaged boy stereotype in your suburban neighborhood that rode around on his bicycle delivering the morning newspaper to subscribers (and even non-subscribers). Thing is, this neighborhood is utter wacky. Seems we have a few sideshow freaks out doing their thing in their driveways for god knows what reason, angry old ladies chasing you with rolling pins, the Biker Gang is out in force tying up the cross streets, seems a few neighbors let their pre-compliance self-propelled lawn mowers run around on their own, and apparently you have a homecoming group with a BMX obstacle course waiting for you at the end of the block. Meanwhile, you get to have fun hurling dead trees at everything and anything in the neighborhood....the mailbox, people's windows, lawns and landscaping, the wackos out and about. But lookout, you have to avoid the storm drains and that blind or otherwise self-entitled bastard in the red Super Beetle!

Paperboy was successful enough to get a side-platform sequel - PAperboy 2, where you got to also play as a girl and roam both sides of the street. However, that release has no arcade equal.
