Spy Hunter
1987, Midway, NES/Famicom
Spy Hunter is a 1984 Arcade game that got a multitude of ports on various platforms including MS-DOS and the Colecovision. The NES version was released in 1987 and is probably the most popularly known home port of the game, as Spy Hunter was a popular arcade game at that time. It seems this game was inspired a bit by the hit TV series starring Mr. Feeny and David Hasselhoff - Knight Rider! (Which also had a NES game).

In Spy Hunter, you play as a super-spy in a souped up car, something similar to KITT from Knight Rider. You are armed with various weapons including some machine guns as the standard weapon, and a secondary set done as power-ups you obtain by driving into the back of a moving box truck to get them installed. These include smoke screens, oil slicks, bombs, and all sorts of other stuff to fowl up the evil traffic you deal with.

Spy Hunter must have done well on the NES, well enough to warrant a sequel "Super Spy Hunter" sometime around 1991-1992, which souped up the formula to Spy Hunter quite a bit. This was a console exclusive IIRC.
