Balloon Fight
1985, Nintendo, NES/Famicom
Balloon Fight is a famous NES classic released right around the launch time of the NES in the States and is considered a part of Nintendo's "Black Label" series of games which also includes Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros., Gyromite, and whatnot. The game seems to take a large inspiration from the Williams Arcade game JOUST.

In Balloon Fight, you play as an un-named "Balloon Fighter" who flies around the screen popping the balloons of other opponents, causing them to fall. It works very much how Joust does, and has much the same mechanics. If a character's balloons are popped, there's a limit of time before they inflate their own balloons back up and join back into the heat of battle.

Balloon Fight is one of those classic NES titles that everyone remembers fondly. Fondly enough for it to have been ported to various other platforms numerous times.
Christ, I've been missing out - My Experiences
Balloon Fight was one of those games I saw a lot on internet lists of classic games, but never gave a second look because it just felt too "cliche" to me in a moment of waxy bearded hipster-like idiocy. Now I see what all the ruckus about....

In early 2024, just as I was starting to build out this insane list of over 310 separate pages for the Sup(reme) 400-in-1 "Game Box" console, I finally started making some play footage for a review and my opinions for my YouTube Channel....and wound up getting rather hooked on Balloon Fight for almost 20 minutes (the longest footage I've got to this point is playing Super Mario Bros. (PAL) With a bad battery at warp speed and making it to level 8-something). Seriously, I MIGHT consider picking this one up the next time I'm at a game store and it's around.

That said, be on the lookout because videos will be released of these games eventually.
