Sonic The Hedgehog
Okay, I'd like to start this off that I was not a "Sega Guy" back in the day. I was a Nintendo kid after being an Atari guy for so long. Sonic The Hedgehog has a very weird place in my lexicon so please bear with me if I mess up on the story of Sonic as the Genesis/Megadrive is not my strongsuit, and I'm a 40 something year old man with a caraeer who does not have the time or resources to constantly be googling video game shit for this site. So if I get something wrong, don't send me a nastygram about it.

Sonic The Hedgehog was Sega's answer to Mario. After failing to get their original mascot off the ground - whose name escapes me at the moment - they came up with Sonic in their American division. Sega was seeking out to be the "Nintendo Killer". They had a new, 16-bit console - the Genesis/Megadrive, and they had their new mascot in his brand new game on said console - Sonic the Hedgehog - a fast moving hedgehog who can curl up into a ball and tear off like a drag racer.

Anyway, Sonic The Hedgehog put the Sega Genesis on the map, along with undercutting Nintendo's price, and having a faster console with newer tech. Unfortunatley, Sega would eventually falter after their failed product the Dreamcast and end up bought out by Nintendo, making Sonic more of a ally than a competitor these days.
