The Backrooms Game Free Edition.....For Now |
If you're not careful and no-clip somewhere where you should not be, you just might find yourself in a series of liminal spaces known as "The Backrooms". Welcome to Level 0, where constant buzzing and humming flourescent lighting continues into eternity like some kind of mad electric Gregorian chant, the floor is damp, the walls are yellow with that helix-like wallpaper. The only decorations are the occasional outlet or various random entities that might show up to torment you, such as "Smilers" "Hounds" or the nightmarish "Bacteria".
In Reality, It's a fictional (or is it?) alternate dimension that has kinda' snowballed off of a 4Chan Post from 2016, where some guy took a picture of what now is a furnature store and a lot of people since then have started building some pretty interesting fiction off of it. The Wikidot I just linked to explains it in more detail, or if you'd rather have some good AMSR that might make for some pretty interesting dreams....Broogli's YouTube Channel might be a good place to get a "feel" for this monotonous, interesting, yet can be quite dangerous place.
However it was Kane Pixels who created the YouTube videos that lead to this really taking off about sometime in 2020 or 2021, and lead to the massive Wikidot I linked to first. So of course, like any of these internet phenomenons, it had to take off into a video game. After all, The Backrooms are ripe for a great premise for a video game. Crazy enough, I should have known I'd fall for this, since all the Five Nights at Freddy's peeps sorta' headed for this. But unlike FNaF, this has not turned into a messy dumpster fire in certain corners of the internet (thankfully) - or at least, I've isolated myself enough from it to keep the unique meaning of the backrooms to me (more on that in a minute). Many games have been made, another one I have on Steam - Pools is also being added. These two games have two different flavors to them. The Backrooms Game, kicks you off in the ubiqutous "Level 0" - where you are tasked with looking at your watch every 30 seconds - no more, no less - to take a moment to stop, remember who you are and where you came from so you don't go raving mad, and of course, watch for - but do not look directly at, light and dark areas (don't look at the lights, they make you crazier), and if you hear something or see some creepy creature - RUN - because if you heard or saw it, it sure as hell has heard or seen you! A24 is making a movie about this too with Kane Pixels help.CreepingNet Goes to the Backrooms....does he function like Broogli does? - My Experiences So I saw Kane Pixels video a couple years ago and it was oddly interesting to me in a way I've never heard anyone talk about before. See, I'm not the kind of person easily creeped out by liminal spaces, and sometimes I'm not nostalgic either, I'm enjoying the quietness, silence, and solitude of liminal spaces instead! I'm going to make some confessions here that might not make me look like the most sociable person. First and foremost, when life really has me down, I LOVE going to places, where there are no people, and it feels a bit, empty and remote. Remote mountains, hiking trails, I used to UrbEx a little bit in my teens and early 20's. The Backrooms, and it's various levels, really tugs at this, especially places like Level 0, the Hub, and the Pool Rooms. These kinds of places, if any nostalgia, bring me back to playing in the lawn as a kid by myself after school before mom came home. I miss that. Just me, an empty yard, and the quietness of the afternoon, with whatever omnipresent noises of things like a humming/buzzing power transformer or a heat pump, or some distant lawn mower, being the noise that's there. Second, I'm not easily unnerved by threats. I have my reasons. Let's just say living my life has been a bit like living in the Backrooms. At least in the Backrooms, I'd not need to pay anybody to survive. Next, a lot of backrooms levels keep you isolated from other people. I'm not that fond of other people to be blunt. This is an attractive quality, even if I have some kind of wacky Alien vs. Predator like stick figure monster chasing after me sounding like a crowd of people on a plane going down when it yells at me. Because I know once I'm away from the monster....I'm going to be just fine. Then there's the whole element of liminal spaces - spaces in the act of transition or so they say. I like them. I like those quiet, people-less, transitional spaces where it's minimal and not chaotic (like my life is). It's relaxing, even if I have to hide under a table or in a garbage can every time the music stops. Honestly, one Backrooms game I was watching on YouTube where they were in the "PArty Rooms" I was falling out of my chair laughing every time the Party-Goer brigade came running out when the music stopped (creepy music stops) - shuffle-shuffle-shuffle-shuffle-shuffle-shuffle.... (creepy music starts over). So of course I sought my own experience with the Backrooms on a computer. And this is what I picked up to do it. The Backrooms Game - even the Free Edition - has two modes. A game mode for when I'm feeling like doing something with a purpose, and then an "Exploration" mode. Honestly, I'm about to pay for the full version (which is only $10.00). My first run through found me in Level 0 succumbing to the madness because I did not bother to stop and read my wristwatch and remember who I was (TAB and then E). Mostly because I was just planning to see just how "terrifying" this game actually is, to be honest, the "free edition" version is not really that hard or scary. My second run was in Exploration mode and then I saw it, a glitched wall, and no-clipped out of the Backrooms after 465 square miles of running. My third attempt is what we see in the YouTube Video below, which is where I managed to no-clip in regular mode not once, but TWICE. Apparently, if you check often enough, you either find the glitched wall, or the entire room turns black, and you no-clip back to reality in the Free Edition. Has me wondering what the PAID version is like. SO maybe I'll expand this page to that until then. That said, things get pretty wild if you don't check your watch.....the ground and walls start moving around on their own, you can hear someone whimpering and crying in the background, lights blow out on their own.....however, I have yet to meet a single Entity in the game - though I SWEAR I saw a bacteria.....ONCE....either that or that Tentacle Spider thing. But otherwise, no hounds, no smilers, no skin stealers.....so I guess Broogli was right-on when it came to no entities in the Backrooms Level 0. Also wondering where the tan room of books happens to be, seems I've managed to no-clip out of the room three times already without finding that place. Guess I'm kinda' made for the Backrooms....if it's anything like this. Just cruisin' down level 0, with some Almond Water and my personal madness, lol. YouTube Videos
