| OTHER MODERN TECHIE STUFF Smartphones, Smart TV's, IoT, and Other Assorted Crap That Has a Computer, but Probably SHould Not! |
Continuing from the O/S page, this is the page that covers all the other tech stuff you might be interested in, or heard about, ,but don't understand, or wonder why it is the way it is...as well as a bit of a venue for me to rant more technically and in-depth about new technologies. See what's covered below, but there will be more in time...
IoT - The Internet of Things - basically, hooking up embedded systems to the internet so you can access them everywhere. While this is a nice technology, only SOME of it is really useful, like a Smart Thermostat when you are remotely managing your pets while on vacation (this was nice). But having a smart camera on my fucking fridge - forget it, give me a Avacado-burst 1970's Whirlpool with an Ice Maker and I'm happy! SaaS - Software as a Service - a Cloud-era bullshit licencing method by corporations to try and suck more money out of you by adding yet one more cost to your monthly bills to use software that once upon a time you went into a computer store, and purchased it for $50-100, and then used it until it was eventaully made "useless" in 5-10 years, only for it to be put on an abandonware site once it hits 15-20 years old. Smart TVs - Your modern, 4K, LCD flatpanel television is also a computerized device running on WebOS or ROKU and has some I.T. concerns and difficulties that need to be dealt with as well. Smartphones - Aka. that "supercomputer" in your pocket you spend hours scrolling useless shit on social media with while pretending to be doing something "smart". A closed source, closed platform pair of platforms run by Google and Apple that are a total PITA to deal with, and leave little to no control to the user. And dumb parents given them to their kids like we got Game Boys back in 1989, except a Game Boy isn't an internet connected device with a color screen that gives us access to poorly moderated material on the internet, and our parents were absolutle nazis about our "Game Boy Usage" back then. Parenting and tech has sure gone down hill, hasn't it?
