CREEPINGNET'S WORLD
CYBERPUNK 2077

CD Projekt Red, Win/Mac/linux, 2025
Cyberpunk 2077 is a post-apocalyptic open-world sandbox RPG released in 2020 by CD Projekt Red, and based on Mike Pondsmith's tabletop RPG (think Dungeons and Dragons) Cyberpunk.

The player assumes the role of V (voiced by Gavin Drea or Cherami Leigh depending on the player character's gender), a mercenary who gets reluctantly imbued with a cybernetic "biochip" containing an engram of legendary rockstar and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (portrayed by Keanu Reeves). As Johnny's consciousness begins overwriting V's own, the two must work together to separate from each other and save V's life, whilst being pursued by the Arasaka Corporation, a powerful megacorporation acting as the de facto ruler of the city. ~ Wikipedia

The game has been hugely successful
Sigh....I guess I'll bite, again
I like open-world sandboxy stuff like Drive Beyond Horizons and I like RPGs like The Legend of Zelda or Dragon Warrior as well. When I first heard of this, the aesthetic and overall vibe seemed right for me, but as usual, in my typical, hipster-esque way, I wrote it off as it was a mainstream, popular title. I also didn't want to live through the dissappointments I had with Five Nights at Freddys franchise. Also, at 43, it's a pain in the ASS to get enough time to really get into a game that requires me to focus heavily on the storyline. That's what makes Drive Beyond Horizons so great for me.

So June 24th, 2025, I took the plunge and bought it plus the expansion for $33 on Steam, and let it download while I alpha tested Horizons. I then proceeded to play the game and got a bit into it. I'm going to say, I kind of like it so far.

First off, the character editing on this game, is INSANE. My in-game character almost looks like me IRL. Long haired cranky looking guy with some scars and bruises in a sleeveless and jeans driving old jacked up vehicles. Sounds about right. DBH doesn't have that. However, I call it insane because you're editing everything down to friggin genetailia....WTF. I decided not to look at that scenario. I chose a scavenger, anyone who knows my guitar and computer hobbies can attest that's a fitting role.

As a scavenger, I started off in what looked like the CD Prokekt version of DBH, except with an EV, a Sheriff that gives me Alabama Flashbacks (fuck off you fascist fuck!), some asshole "professional" mechanic making snyde comments on my makeshift repairs that'll probably last longer than his business, and people prying for information I don't want to give up to anyone because it's none of their damn business!

Once hitting the roadway, driving is not much different than DBH except the inability to open the doors and hood directly, and the fact the camera doesn't follow the car from a static view, so greeeeeeeat! Now I have to steer the car AND the camera to follow it properly when I want a Pole Position style rear-view.

then I have to climb a radio tower, hack into a signal, talk to some guy who sounds like he wants nothing to do with me, to send me to some guy in the middle of nowhere to carry away a chest with an iguana in it. Of course ladders don't work like Pools so I just jumped off the entire tower and got some hitpoints removed as a penalty for my stupidity. Then proceeded to knock down a power pole with my car (daaaamn, did they reanimate the corpse of Derek Elliot from Ford to design this thing...I've only seen my Explorer do shit like that unscuffed), tear through town like a maniac, narrowly miss a pedestrian, and find the guy I was to find...only to get snagged at Customs on my way into fasicst city, and then get into a gunfight with some 2077 Police interceptor Explorers I guess. We eventually ducked off into a garage. I stopped during the battle training sequence because my wife starrted getting annoying at that point and I wanted to go to the garage to rant about Amazon for awhile.

So who knows what crazy misadventures I'll go through in the game but I'm sure I might even do some post-retirement videos of it at some point complete with my same maniacal commentary.
