CREEPINGNET'S WORLD
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
The Hard and Easy Roads to Big Whoop!
A Walkthrough
In 1992, the DOS-based sequel to The Secret of Monkey Island was released - Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.

Featuring a new art style that was a bit more wacky and angular compared to the darn-near-photorealistic work of the previous game, and a brand new "streaming" situational music system known as "iMUSE", Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's revenge continues the classic style of the original Monkey Island game, with 256 color VGA Graphics, complex puzzles (simplified for beginners through the then new "Easy Mode") - Monkey Island 2 was a push forward in the genre.

Unfortuantley, this would be original designer Ron Gilbert's last installment in the series, he would leave LucasArts not long afterward to work on Full Throttle and eventually start working with some other game companies. HE had an entirely different vision for a Monkey Island 3 after this one, but that left with him. Since there's been a lot of activity on the front since Disney gave him the go ahead after obtaining Lucas's IP in the early 21st century, and so there's been some growth in the franchise since then with Ron involved, but for a long time, the series sorta....went off to the wayside.

The Plot of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
Since defeating the evil Ghost Pirate LeChuck in the first game, Guybrush Threepwood has set out on a whole new adventure: finding the lost treasure of "Big Whoop". That's pretty much it - without the spoilers.

The full plot synapisis is while looking for Big Whoop, Guybrush encounters a little local bully on Scabb Island known as Largo LeGrande who has put an embargo on the island preventing any ships from coming to, or going from, Scabb Island. While using VooDoo practices provided by the serie's titual "Voodoo Lady" to drive Largo out of Scabb, Guybrush inadvertantly provides a piece of the Ghost Pirate LeChuck he kept as a trinket, leading Largo to revive him as a re-animated corpse!

So of course, LeChuck is angry - hence the "LeChuck's Revenge" part of the story, and the adventure comes to a pretty surprise (if a bit abrupt) ending cliffhanger. To be resolved in the 1995 game: The Curse of Monkey Island.

Copy Protection
Monkey Island 2 came with a code-wheel like the first game, except this one had various cartooney VooDoo ingredients on it, and you matched them up with other ingredients and put in the proportions on the purple startup screen. SCUMMVM users need not worry at all since it defeats this, but it's still a fun experience.
EASY MODE or NORMAL MODE?
As a concession for newcoming adventure game players, there was a new "Easy Mode" added to the game to allow people to pick up the game more easily if they were not familiar to it. You have to remember, this was 1992, when most people did not even have a computer at home, let alone have a grasp on adventure games. PCs were just starting to show up in the home, and just starting to gain momentum as a gaming platform, so graphical adventures were a bit of a foreign concept to a lot of people who were then more likely used to things like Pac-Man or Super Mario Bros. This alters the puzzels - hence why this basically a "Double Walkthrough"
EASY MODE
PART 1: The Largo Embargo
First off, I want to ask, why are you even reading this? This IS Easy Mode BTW? But hey, maybe you're really really afraid of "f*** around and find out" - so yeah, I'll do a walkthrough for both installments (plus writing these is fun for me).

So when the game begins, Guybrush will have a little talk with his pals on the beach before a campfire - spinning old tired yarns he's obviously told before. Tired of it, Guybrush gets up and walks to the "city" (and I use that term loosely here) of Scabb Island ~ Woodtick, to a bridge onto the docks, right next to a sign with a Shovel. Feel free to snag the shovel, or not - c'mon, time for some Adventure Game Confidence building here.

If you really want some context, it might be wiser to duck out now, and head south and down to the swamp on the east central side of Scabb - and take the coffin boat east to the Skeleton head. VooDoo Lady is your informant in this game. Of course, she'll tell you about Largo and then inform you about her want to create a Voodoo Doll of him. You need four items: Something of the thread, something of the head, something of the body, and something of the dead.

Of course, Guybrush, complete with an inventory with enough riches to probably buy the whole bloody island - the minute he walks onto that dock, a little pipsqueak in green pants, Largo LaGrande, will walk up, and no matter what your responses are, he'll Give Guybrush a good shakedown (how he did not just dump all the contents into the ocean, and how the Shovel managed to stay in his pockets - is anyone's guess).

Freshly mugged, Guybrush now needs to start exploring and talking to people in the town. In Woodtick, there's a rather androgynous carpenter, a "small person" cartographer, a bar of course, with a kitchen..... a motel, and a laundromat run by a deaf, dumb, and blind old man, and of course, our pals, The Men of Low Moral Fiber, are just taking a nap here with their pet rat for no good reason.

Now, the easiest way to get started, is the way we get started in most Monkey Island games....SERIAL KLEPTOMANIA!

First we go over to the second ship up top - Wally B. Feed's Cartography, and swipe up a piece of paper. Then, go across the way over to the Bloody Lip bar boat - BUT - don't go inside the main patron area yet, go climb in the open back window first to an empty kitchen. Snag the knife that's in there, and then walk out front, let the barkeep yell at you, and of course, talk to him a bit, and if you hit all the right Questions, Largo LaGrande will come, have a drink, take barkeep's money, and then hock a loogie on the wall. Use the paper on it to collect it - we will need it later.

Now climb up and out of the Bloody Lip bar, and go-west-young-man, to the motel. Here, we can cut ol' Pegbiter (the pet crocodile) loose, and the motel manager will run out to go catch him "before he catches someone else". LOL. See that door in the hallway, the only one there I might add. That, my friends, is Largo Lagrande's motel room. Just waltz on in - and if he's there, just give some time and come back later. He randomly spawns in his room, and sometimes he's not there.

If Largo is not in his room, we can grab several things of use to us in there. First is the pressed shirt on the bed, next is the Better Than Ezera singer looking wig on a foam head on the vanity. Either way, just snag the stuff, and head out.

So what are we doing snagging all this stuff? Well, we are, for all intents and purposes, gathering some key items. Remember that shovel you swiped from the sign in Woodtick? Yeah, if you have not nabbed that yet, get it now, and let's head south and east to the Cemetary.

At the Cemetary, head for the hill way in back, nevermind the bats, they're just there for atmosphere. Anyway, once on the hill, notice the lone tombstone in the middle - read it if you want, or not. Anyway, use your shovel on the grave and enjoy the theatrics. One....two...threee....ah ah ah ah ah ah!.

Now with the ingredients for the voodoo doll, head to the VooDoo Lady, and she will construct the doll and give you a "JuJu" bag with it and instruct you to go handle largo. However, like a subpar WiFi adapter, you'll need to get close to the VAP (VooDoo Access Point) - which in this case is Largo - to be able to do any remote administration to open up a can of whoopass on Largo.

So go to the motel, open the door, Largo will most likely start trying to say something funny and mean - and as he talks, QUICKLY use the pins on the voodoo doll. If you need more time, lower the text speed. After a few stabs, he'll start to leave, and of course, Guybrush, being somewhat on the spectrum, for no good reason, shows Largo the still living beard of LeChuck - of which Largo pilfers....hoo boy.

So of course, Guybrush will go running to mommy...er..ah... the VooDoo lady to ask questions and then be told to pretty much "stay the course" he's already on. So yeah, LeChuck is back, and apparently Big Whoop is what will keep you safe - lol. The last thing to do is to talk to Captain Dread whose ship sits alone at a dock on the southwest corner of Scabb Island. With the Embargo lifted, he can now set sail.
PART 2: The Map Pieces
Once we have Dread's services, we can travel to one of three islands.....

Scabb Island - The law-free Pirate-driven island we were just on, where it's always night time. Has the city of Woodtick, Voodoo Lady, a graveyard with tombs, and a beach with a weenie hut.

Phatt Island - Run by tyrannical dictator and glutton Governor Phatt - basically a big fat man who lays in bed and has chud sprayed in his mouth every so often by hoses to the tune of an alarm in his Mansion. There they have a library, a sheriff, a bootleg game in the alleyway, a utility tunnel, and some guy living on a island off the coast who likes to play drinking games.

Booty Island - Not as in stolen goods, but shake yer' booty as this is the party island of the tri-island area, run by - yeah, Governor ELAINE MARLEY from the first game, Guybrush's love interest. Anyway, on this island, we have straw treenhouses, a fish fry party at Elaine's mansion across a land bridge, costume shop, thrift shop, and Stan's Previously used Coffins (yuck).

EASY MODE VS HARD MODE - DIFFEREMCES
So, you're really curious for a nerdy dissection of what the difference is between Easy Mode and Hard Mode in all 4 parts of Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge - well...here it is. In detail. I don't even think I've seen this on any other website. Total Spoilers - so don't read this section unless you beat the game, or don't mind hearing dome details.
PART 1: The Largo Embargo
EASY MODE HARD MODE DESCRIPTION
There is no stick on Scabb Beach There's a stick on the beach In easy mode, there's no puzzle for capturing the rat for the Bloody Lip Chef as he's already been fired
The Bloody Lip Bar Needs a Chef The Bloody Lip Bar has a Chef You have to get him fired in the hard game before you can ask for a job, you do this by putting a rat in his soup
There is No Bucket at the Laundromat There is a bucket at the landromat In hard mode, you need the bucket to fill with swamp mud to soil Largo's shirt so he gets a ticket to the laundromat for a pearly white bra. In easy mode, he has a shirt on the bed.
String at VooDoo Lady's has no hotspot There's a string at the VooDoo Lady's under a skull in the entryway In hard mode, this string is used with the stick fromt he beach and cheese squigglies in pegbiter's bowl to trap the rat to get the bloody lip chef fired so you can take his job.
Captain Dread is good to go as soon as Largo is Gone He's Missing a Sailing Necklace and needs you to find it In the hard game, you have to steal Wally B. Feed's (cartographer) monocle for Captain Dread to be able to charter his ship

PART 2: The Map Pieces
DESCRIPTION EASY MODE HARD MODE
There's no parrot chow on Dread's ship When on Dread's ship for the first time, and as long as there is a parrot chow bag on board, Guybrush stands on the back saying "I'm off to find Big Whoop". This is because you NEED that parrot chow bag in hard mode to buy a mirror that's needed to obtain a map piece.
The map piece at the thrift shop is 40 pieces of eight The map piece at the thrift shop is 40,000 pieces of eight In easy mode, you can simply buy the map piece, which is a big reason why Captain Kate, the Monkey Head, and the SS Mad Monkey, don't exist in the game, nor does Captain Loogies spitting contest, and the hotspots for the treehouses and the cliff have been disabled, and there's no fisherman at the wharf, and no need to access the kitchen. In hard mode, you have to charter a chip, trick the fisherman with a fish from the fish fry, use his fishing rod to get the map piece, use the dog to FIND the map piece - and those are tied into the puzzle for LeChuck's Castle later (so no fun singalong either).
There's no Spitting Contest There's a Spitting contest needed to get a map piece
Captain Kate does not exist in this version Captain Kate Capsize offers Ship Charters on Booty Island
